How to choose wireless earbuds and headphones (UK)

We have not tested these products. No earbuds or headphones on this page have been listened to or measured by us. Our comparisons are built from published specifications, current retail prices and summaries of publicly available owner feedback — never from hands-on claims we cannot back up.

Earbuds vs over-ear headphones

Earbuds are pocketable and fine for commuting and calls; over-ear headphones generally sound better and isolate more, at the cost of size. In-ear suits the gym; over-ear suits long desk listening.

Active noise cancellation (ANC)

ANC uses microphones to cut ambient sound and varies hugely by model. Check owner feedback on wind and voice handling, not just the marketing claim.

Codecs: what 'Hi-Res' actually needs

Bluetooth codecs (AAC, aptX, LDAC) affect quality. AAC is fine for iPhone; LDAC/aptX Adaptive help on Android with compatible gear. Both the source and the earbuds must support the codec.

Battery and charging

Earbuds quote per-charge life plus a case top-up (typically 5–10h per charge). Check whether the case charges via USB-C or wireless, and whether quick-charge gives an hour from minutes.

Water and sweat resistance

Look for an IP rating (IPX4 resists sweat; IPX7 survives immersion). Gym/run use needs at least IPX4. Treat maker ratings as a guide, not a guarantee.

Connectivity and multipoint

Multipoint connects to two devices at once. Bluetooth 5.3/5.4 affects stability and latency; gamers should check for a low-latency mode.

Warranty and UK service

Check warranty length and whether service is UK-based. Earbuds are easy to lose or damage; some makers sell single replacements.
